[There's another, new, article update at end of this posting, dated 5th May 2007] So the saga continues....
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, if you get my meaning, today's media reports that the Melamine-contaminated wheat and rice gluten that was killing pets around the world just a few weeks back, is now also in the human food chain.
Being a vegetarian and an avid consumer of Tofu - which I buy from a Chinese shop in the Wedge in Rivonia, I now have to ask how safe the tofu is? Particularly as it's munched in great quantities by the 4.5 year-old in my life.
I've contacted a friend of mine in food science and analysis and I'm going to have some of the Tofu checked out by a lab - just in case. The two articles below - you may wish to save them and give a 'print' instruction for easier reading, are from the Citizen and the Star newspapers respectively, today.
American websites and Blogs - and not without reason - are going ballistic about the advisability of importing anything intended for consumption purposes, from China. Ethics have gone out of the window as greed had come rampaging through the Chinese Manufacturing door. The mainland Chinese authorities, given population and infrastructural vastness, and utter lack of control in their manufacturing sector, haven't a hope in hell of maintaining any degree of regulation in food ingredient production processes.
So the logical thing for we unfortunate recipients of their toxic exports, is simply to avoid food products that might have mainland China-originated ingredients in them. Difficult I know, but some of the categories at least, will be fairly obvious. If you read the articles below and see what's happened in canine kidneys, when lethal, illegal chemicals reacted with each other in the gluten products, you can imagine what the irreversible effects might well be, in the human brain. A distinctly disturbing prospect.
Isn't this awful? A luta continua (the struggle continues!) Click on the link below this article for the original Blog posting articles.
